Frequently Asked Questions
Are the products handmade?
Yes, all of our products are hand-made by skilled craftsmen using hand tools, no chemicals are used throughout the entire process.
Why is olive wood used in the kitchen?
Olive wood is slow growing and very dense with a tight-knit grain which makes it extremely durable and smooth, so it’s ideal for cutting boards, serving boards, salad bowls and utensils etc.
How do I care for Olive Wood?
Goya Blue olive wood products will remain in your family for decades with a little bit of TLC. All items arrive to you polished and protected with high-quality olive oil. To keep the longevity of your piece, we suggest hand cleaning only with warm soapy water, lemon and salt is another natural alternative. The wood must not be left in water for long periods of time. To keep your piece healthy you can apply olive or vegetable oil with a cloth after it dries, this will help to protect the surface whilst adding shine and enhancing those beautifully marbled pigments.
Are the products ready to use?
Before leaving our workshop, all of our olive wood products are carefully inspected for quality and then seasoned again with oil, so that they reach you in perfect condition. Once you see the wood dull down it is time to treat it with some more oil and bring it back to life.
Can I put it in a dishwasher?
Do not put these products in a dishwasher, just wipe clean with soapy water and dry as soon as you can. Avoid soaking in water as this can damage the wood.
How do I clean after cutting raw meats?
After using items for raw meat, poultry or seafood, simply wipe clean with a cloth soaked in hot soapy salt water and immediately dry.
Occasionally, you can sanitise the product with a small amount of cooking salt, rub the salt into the board with half a lemon, then wipe off and apply olive oil. This is the best method to naturally sanitise the wood and avoid the use of harsh chemicals.
Is Olive wood antibacterial?
Olive wood is naturally antibacterial and it’s dense and tightly grained surface resists stains and odours.
Will Olive wood blunt my knives?
Olive wood is hard and durable but it is kind on knives unlike bamboo, teak, and hardened glass. Some woods can be overly hard and contain silica like Teak which will grind down and blunt the edges of your knife. Despite it’s popularity in the kitchen, bamboo, especially the nodules, are much too hard for knives. The manufacture process for bamboo also requires large amounts of rock-hard setting resin to assemble the pieces together, think of your poor knives! Plastic cutting boards are nice and soft for knives but unfortunately have to be replaced very often once the surface is littered with deep marks and scratches where bacteria can thrive. They also have an annoying tendency to become stained by whatever has been cut on them. Olive wood cutting boards resist bacteria better than plastic as they are kept oiled and are more scratch resistant. Plastics are also harmful to the environment and none biodegradable, unlike wood.
Remember that sharp knives are safer knives, as they require less pressure and effort to cut, so having the right items in your kitchen is important to consider to prolong the sharpness of your knives.
Is Olive wood water resistant?
Thanks to it’s tight and dense grain, olive wood is one of the most water resistant woods you can find, but you still need to avoid soaking it for long periods of time.
Why is olive wood expensive compared to other woods?
Olive wood is often more expensive than many other alternatives because grows in a very unique and irregular way, this is what produces the signature marbling of the grain. These traits make it harder and more expensive to process, and must be done so by specialists - it takes immense skill and craftsmanship to turn out olive wood products as it truly is a wood like no other. It also takes a very long time to dry out due to it’s density, and this can take as long as three to four years to avoid the wood warping, unless it is dried in a special kiln at very low temperatures.
Are Olive trees sustainable?
Olive trees are widely protected and respected but thankfully they are not an endangered species due to the vast production of Olives & Olive oil. The wood used in most furniture and smaller objects is gathered from the pruning of branches, however, our olive wood comes from logs sold to be used for combustible reasons, and we do not cut down any tree solely for the purpose of our products. Olive wood is not used for building and construction as it is not suitable. Farmers plant hundreds of thousands of trees each year across the globe.
Natural Product Disclaimer
All olive wood products are natural and unique, especially the characteristics of the rustic products that have some bark remaining, such as our ‘live edge’ items. The variation in grain patterns also varies widely across the range of products and we cannot guarantee any consistency from one piece to the next as each is unique. On rare occasion there may be products that may develop a loose piece of bark or a slightly rough edge or small split somewhere. We fix any small splits by filling with epoxy resin and sanding down. Likewise, if the outer bark becomes loose somewhere. It is easily fixed with some epoxy glue. Just prise it apart, apply glue and tape it down until set. These are natural products and will last a life time if cared for correctly. Keep them well-oiled to bring out the beauty of the wood.
